VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION – NOW OPEN

The 2019 Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Winter Games will bring approximately 800 athletes, coaches and families to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.  To ensure our games will provide “the best experience ever”, we will be recruiting approximately 400 volunteers to make this happen.

Volunteer Minimum Requirements:

Minimum of 16 years of age to volunteer.
Children aged 10-15 may volunteer with a parent or guardian in the Family Volunteer Program. (See further details below)
Must be able to commit a minimum of 4 hours to the Games
Must complete a Criminal Records Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)
Must complete an Online Orientation Training Session
Must attend one In-Person Volunteer Orientation Session in January

Games Volunteer Registration Process

We will be using MyVolunteerPage by Better Impact to register all volunteers.

1. The link below will take you to the MyVolunteerPage.com. You will need to Create an Account and password that will permit you to proceed in the process.
2. We will need your personal contact info, shirt size, and whether you are volunteering as a family or group, etc.
3. When you submit your registration form, you will receive an email to confirm your submission.
4. You will then need to complete the CRC/VSS (see submission information below) and the Online Training Orientation (approx.. 45 mins).
5. When these two items are completed, you will be notified by email, at which time you will be invited to log in and request your volunteer jobs. You will also be asked to register for the In-person training session.
6. After requesting your volunteer jobs, you will be notified by email as to when your requests are approved.

Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening (CRC/VSS)

A CRC / VSS must be completed for all people over the age of 16 who are volunteering for the games.  The CRC/VSS is in place to provide screening of individuals who intend on volunteering with the vulnerable sector.  A vulnerable person is defined as a person who, because of their age, a disability, or other circumstances, whether temporary or permanent are (a) in a position of dependence on others or (b) are otherwise at a greater risk than the general population of being harmed by a person in a position of authority or trust relative to them.

Obtaining a CRC / VSS is a mandatory step in the volunteer registration process

Already have a CRC / VSS completed?

A CRC/VSS completed after January 31st, 2018 will be accepted.

You must scan a copy of this completed check and send it to: volunteersadmin@ssm2019games.com

You will need to retain your original copy with you as you will need to bring it to the Volunteer Orientation Night.

How to apply for a CRC / VSS

If you reside in Sault Ste. Marie:

Once you have submitted your Volunteer Registration application form, you will receive an email with CRC/VSS application form that must be taken to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service along with two pieces of government issued identification; one which must have a photograph and proof of address.

There will be no fee for the Records Check. The results of the CRC/VSS will be provided directly to the Games Volunteer Coordinator. As this check is for the sole purpose of the games, you will not receive a copy of your Records Check. You will be notified through Better Impact that your status as Volunteer has been accepted.

What if I reside outside of Sault Ste. Marie?

If you reside outside of Sault Ste. Marie, your options to get a CRC / VSS:

You will be required to attend the Police Agency that services your area. Fees may be applicable. You then must scan a copy of this completed check and send it to: volunteersadmin@ssm2019games.com

You will need to keep your original copy with you as you will need to bring it to the Volunteer Orientation Night.

 

DEADLINE:  All CRC / VSS must be received by January 10th, 2019.

 

Volunteer Orientation Session

All volunteers are required to attend one of the three Volunteer Orientation Sessions:

Saturday, January 5th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm
Or
Monday, January 7th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm
Or
Saturday, January 19th from 1:00-4:00 pm

Family Volunteer Program

Special Olympics Ontario is proud to launch the Family Volunteer Program for the 2019 Provincial Winter Games.

Due to legal liabilities, the minimum age for the family volunteer program will be 10yrs of age as of the start of the games.
Family volunteers aged 10 – 15 years of age will not be required to complete a CRC/VSS
ALL volunteers aged 16 years and over MUST submit a CRC/VSS
Family volunteers aged 10-15 years of age must volunteer side by side with a family member who is 16 years of age or older.
Family Volunteers will be placed in a position that is conducive to young persons. (ie wranglers at Opening Ceremonies).
Family volunteers aged 10-15 years of age will be registered automatically with the parent/guardian.
